General Motors Corp. said Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 that its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car should get 230 miles per gallon of gasoline in city driving, more than four times the mileage of the current champion, the Toyota Prius. The GM Volt is an electric car with a difference....namely a small gasoline engine. The Volt is designed to run on electric power only for about 40 miles, after which the gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the battery, giving it a range of more than 300 miles. The battery can be recharged by plugging in to a home outlet. Although GM has not released pricing information on the Volt, industry analysts estimate it will cost about $40,000.
